Travel and pregnancy

Holidays during pregnancy do not require special precautions.

Depending on the stage of pregnancy, the means of transportation, and the distance, your gynecologist may recommend certain restrictions. In general, traveling during pregnancy is absolutely safe, as long as there are no complications — especially during the second trimester.

Can I travel by plane?

The International Air Travel Association recommends that pregnant women avoid flights after the 37th week of pregnancy. The same applies from the 32nd week for women with high-risk pregnancies, such as those at risk of preterm birth or with multiple pregnancies. In any case, a note from your gynecologist will help avoid problems at the airport.
Ask for an aisle seat to make it easier to get up, stretch, or go to the restroom. Larger aircraft provide better cabin decompression. It is also recommended to use graduated compression stockings to prevent deep vein thrombosis.
Managing morning sickness and nausea, especially in the first trimester, may be a significant challenge during a flight.

Traveling by car

The use of seat belts in the car is very important, as they protect both the mother and the fetus. Airbags should also remain active, since their advantages outweigh any potential risks. Adjusting the seat further back will help avoid direct contact with the airbag in case of an accident. Try to limit travel time to under five hours. Use breaks to walk and stretch.

Can I travel by ferry?

The ship’s movements may cause nausea and discomfort. Make sure there is a doctor on board in case of complications. If there are intermediate stops at ports, ask for information about nearby health centers and hospitals. Be cautious with certain anti-nausea medications, as some have been linked to complications for both mother and fetus!

Tips

A common issue during holidays is gastroenteritis, which can even lead to dehydration. That’s why it’s important to drink plenty of water, preferably bottled.
Also, make sure that the milk you consume while on holiday is pasteurized. Avoid fruits and vegetables unless you are certain they are thoroughly washed or cooked, and pay special attention to the proper cooking of meat and fish.
It is also useful to carry snacks with you, such as toast, a cereal bar, or dried fruit.
Don’t forget that loose, comfortable clothing helps proper blood circulation. Additionally, suitable footwear with good support and medium-height heels is recommended.
Mild exercise, such as swimming, is acceptable. It’s best to avoid intense exercise and physical exhaustion. Choose your activities wisely and take some time for yourself!
